According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the top professional society for cosmetic and plastic surgeons, the top five most popular cosmetic surgeries performed by its members for 2017 were non-invasive or minimally invasive, procedures. This has been an ongoing tend for several years, and Dr. Mark Deuber has seen this within his own practice. (more…)

As with so many things in life, timing is crucial. When it comes to breast augmentation surgery, timing can mean the difference between having fun in the sun and having to stay at home to recuperate. When discussing breast augmentation with patients at our Dallas, TX practice, we often discuss the ideal time of year for surgery.
In our recent video, When Is the Best Time for Breast Augmentation Surgery, from our video series The Deubers Are In, we consider the issue of timing when it comes to breast augmentation. We’ll note some basics about surgical recovery and then offer advice on the best months to get breast implants.
Full Recovery Takes Weeks, Not Days
Thanks to modern advances in plastic surgery techniques, patients who undergo breast augmentation surgery experience 24-hour recovery. Patients can resume many of their normal activities 24 hours after they’ve gotten breast implants.
Yet 24-hour recovery is different from full recovery.
While a breast augmentation patient may be able to walk around home and perform simple tasks, she will not be fully healed from surgery for several weeks. The idea of 24-hour recovery causes a number of misconceptions, and some patients mistakenly believe that they can undergo breast augmentation in May and be on the beach the next weekend. That is not the case.
Restrictions on Swimming and Submerging in Water
After breast augmentation, patients will want to avoid swimming and submerging in water for six weeks. This is a common sense precaution to prevent post-surgical infection while a patient is still in the process of recovery.
Whether it’s in a pool, a hot tub, a lake, or the ocean, water contains many vectors for infection and disease. Patients need to avoid the water until they’ve sufficiently healed.
Side Effects Take Time to Work Through
In addition to avoiding infection, the side effects of breast augmentation surgery take a few weeks to work themselves out. For example, bruising and swelling of the breasts is most pronounced in the first two weeks, yet minor swelling and discoloration can last for another few weeks after that.
Again, there’s a difference between 24-hour recovery and full surgical recovery that patients should keep in mind when they’re scheduling their surgery.
December and January: The Ideal Time for Breast Augmentation
December and January are the ideal months to schedule a breast augmentation surgery. During the winter, work tends to slow down and people usually take extended vacations. There are many holidays during these months that make them optimal for maximizing time off.
By the time a patient is fully healed, she won’t just be ready for summer. Patients will be able to hit the beach for spring break without any lingering side effects or risk of post-op complications.
The Deubers Are In: Video Chats about Plastic Surgery
Dr. Deuber and his wife Cary have recorded a video about the right time for breast augmentation surgery, which elaborates on the points made above. It’s part of a regular video series called The Deubers Are In.
New videos will appear on this site and on social media every two weeks, with the Deubers discussing topics that are of interest to plastic surgery patients. Check back again for the latest videos in the series.

Bariatric surgery is a great option to consider for people who are obese or morbidly obese. The surgery helps patients lose weight quickly and safely, with long-term benefits to health and wellness. After losing a massive amount of weight, many patients will experience issues with loose skin and overall body contour.
At our Dallas, TX plastic surgery center, we’ve helped numerous bariatric surgery patients get rid of this loose skin and enhance their appearance and confidence in the process. Undergoing liposuction for cosmetic fat removal is often a key part of a comprehensive body sculpting plan for bariatric surgery patients once they’ve lost a lot of excess body weight.
Problem Pockets of Fat
Even thought bariatric surgery results in weight loss, it doesn’t mean a patient will lose all of his or her body fat. Pockets of fat may stick around in certain problem areas, such as the abdominal region, the thighs, the buttocks, the hips, and the upper arms. Even with a healthy diet and regular exercise, this body fat may not go away entirely.
Body contouring surgery such a liposuction is the only way to get rid of this stubborn, unwanted fat as well as loose skin and stretch marks. A plastic surgeon can sculpt your frame after massive weight loss, allowing you to look your very best.
Timing Your Liposuction for Maximum Benefit
In order to make sure the results of liposuction last after bariatric surgery, timing is key. Bariatric surgery patients will generally be losing weight and achieving their weight loss goals for one to two years after their surgical procedure. Performing body contouring surgeries too soon means the results of these procedures may not be optimal.
As a general rule, bariatric surgery patients should only consider plastic surgery procedures after they have achieved their weight loss goals. By that point, they will not be losing any more weight, and the appearance of the body will not undergo any significant changes.
Keep in mind that this ideal time for surgery varies from patient to patient. It could be 18 months after bariatric surgery or even three or more years after a weight loss procedure. A consultation with a plastic surgeon can help determine the proper timing for liposuction and other post-bariatric cosmetic surgeries.
The Benefits of Liposuction after Bariatric Surgery
There are a number of key benefits to undergoing bariatric surgery after you’ve lost a lot of weight:
- Unwanted pockets of fat can be removed with ease
- Improved body contour and appearance after significant weight loss
- Especially ideal for parts of the body where fat is hard to lose (e.g., shoulders, triceps, thighs)
- Surgical scarring from liposuction is minimal and difficult to detect
- Patients feel better about their overall appearance
Liposuction as Part of a Total Body Lift Plan
Liposuction alone will not be enough to address the stretch marks and loose skin that bariatric surgery patients face after their surgery. Liposuction may just be just part of a multi-step total body lift that helps a patient look trimmer and fitter.
Total body lift surgery with liposuction can be discussed as part of the consultation process. A full, customized treatment plan can be developed that properly addresses all of your cosmetic concerns.
