Four Ways to Enhance Your Lips
Winter can be particularly hard on your lips. The combination of cold temperatures and brisk winds can leave your lips dry, chapped, and even cracked. While this can be treated, some patients also wish to plump up and enhance the appearance of their lips.
Here, Dr. Mark Deuber shares four ways to improve your lips this holiday season.
If you want that flushed, full look to your lips, but are not yet ready to make a full commitment to dermal fillers or lip implants, lip plumpers may be a great option.
These look like a standard lipstick or balm and come in a variety of shades, including clear. They will give you the look of bee-stung lips for up to four hours thanks to a mild irritant, such as menthol or cinnamon.
There are also lip-enhancing treatments that are emollients containing elastins to help hydrate your lips and firm them up. They can be worn alone or as a base underneath regular lipstick or lip gloss.
Dermal Fillers for the Lips
Dermal fillers for the lips work almost identically to those for the rest of the face. They are injected just under the surface of the lips to fill them out and provide more volume and shape.
Many dermal fillers contain a soft gel and are hyaluronic acid-based. Because these dermal fillers are made from a material similar to the body’s natural hyaluronic acid, there is a greatly reduced chance of an allergic reaction.
Dermal fillers produce a natural look and results usually last about six months, at which point treatment can be repeated.
A lip fat transfer procedure is an excellent option if you have already decided to undergo a liposuction procedure to remove stubborn pockets of excess fat from other parts of your body, such as the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs.
You can then have some of that fat transferred to your lips to give them more volume. This is done in just one session (combined with the liposuction procedure), rather than as several procedures over time for dermal fillers.
If you have been satisfied with the results from either dermal fillers or fat transfers to your lips and have decided you are ready for permanent enhancement, lip implants are the ideal solution.
Lip implants are made of a soft material that feels and looks natural, and either serves as a matrix to which your natural lip tissue will attach (GORE-TEX® or Softform implants) or is made from donated tissue (AlloDerm® lip implants).
The biggest advantage of lip implants is that they provide you a permanent solution to thin lips.
Fortunately, there are a number of lip products on the market that allow you to do everything from protect your lips against harsh elements, plump them up, and add a touch of color.
