Body contouring procedures such as liposuction are designed to restore proper proportion. A body that is in balance is perceived by the human eye as being more attractive. Unfortunately, many of us are genetically predisposed to stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction can be an ideal procedure for removing these small bulges. It is not, however, a weight loss technique. While the fat cells removed via liposuction are gone permanently, if you gain weight after your procedure, your remaining fat cells will get larger, often in ways that are strange looking. So, it is important for liposuction patients to practice a healthy lifestyle.

Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Mark Deuber, has personal experience with the difference that a healthful lifestyle can make. Since meeting his wife, Cary, and adopting a mostly plant-based diet and regular exercise routine, he is considerably trimmer, has more energy and feels more vital. This is why he encourages all of his body contouring patients to adopt a good diet and consistent exercise regime. It is also why he will be honest with you as to whether or not he feels that you’re a good candidate for liposuction. This begins with an in-person exam.

During your liposuction consultation in his Dallas office, Dr. Deuber will listen closely to what bothers you about your body as well as what you hope to achieve with liposuction. He will ask about your medical history and any prior body contouring procedures, both surgical and non-surgical. Then, he will perform a thorough physical examination to assess:

  • Areas of excess fat
  • Amount of excess fat
  • Skin tone and texture

The latter is critical. You skin needs enough elasticity to “bounce back” and re-form over your new contour. While Dr. Deuber often performs liposuction as a stand-alone procedure, he may also combine it with another procedure such as a tummy tuck or breast surgery as part of a Mommy Makeover.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is any man or woman:

  • In good overall health
  • Who does not smoke
  • At or near a maintainable goal weight

As discussed, liposuction is not about weight loss. It is about smoothing out unsightly lumps and bumps in order to restore harmony to your body contour.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which a narrow, metal tube called a cannula is placed beneath the skin through very small incisions. Dr. Deuber strategically moves the cannula back and forth to break up the fat cells and sculpt your body into its ideal form. One of the best things about liposuction is that it is incredibly versatile, able to remove fat almost anywhere on the face, neck and body including the:

  • Chin
  • Neck
  • arms
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Breasts
  • Hips
  • inner/outer thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Knees

There are a number of different liposuction techniques. While all are effective for removing fat, Dr. Deuber uses Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) because he has found it to deliver superior results with less bruising, swelling and trauma to the tissues. This, in turn, translates to a faster recovery.

What are the Benefits of Liposuction?

As someone who began his career in finance, Dr. Deuber understands the benefits of the efficiency model. Recovery is a cost. It costs money to take time away from work or your daily routine, but more importantly, it costs time. As a busy plastic surgeon, husband and father, Dr. Deuber is keenly aware that time is your most precious commodity. This is why he is constantly embracing cutting-edge techniques such as Power Assisted Liposuction that deliver an exemplary, safe result with as little downtime as possible.

Dr. Deuber is also gifted with a fantastic artistic eye. It permeates every aspect of his life from the house that he and Cary designed together, to the gorgeous food that he cooks on his Instagram famous stove, to his aesthetic results. This is particularly important in liposuction where the smallest subtraction in the exact right spot can literally transform your body.

Power Assisted Liposuction vs. Manual Liposuction

The difference between Power Assisted Liposuction and manual liposuction or heat-based techniques that use ultrasound, radiofrequency or laser is the power-assisted cannula. It is able to move back and forth in your treatment area at a speed that is barely visible to the human eye. This allows Dr. Deuber to gently release the fat cells from the surrounding connective tissue without causing harm. This translates to a faster recovery which is a hallmark of the Deuber difference. But it’s also critical if any of the fat is going to be used for fat grafting as it means greater cell viability.

Other benefits of Power Assisted Liposuction include:

  • Improved surgeon precision
  • Safer and more comfortable procedure for the patient
  • Less bruising, swelling and trauma to tissues

By allowing Dr. Deuber to remove the fat without damaging the surrounding micro-vessels or connective tissue, Power Assisted Liposuction patients are up on their feet and back to their daily lives much more quickly than with any other liposuction technique.

LIPOSUCTION Procedure Overview

Dr. Deuber performs all of his liposuction procedures under general anesthesia at Lemmon Avenue Surgery Center, his on-site, state-certified and fully accredited day surgery center in Dallas. After first marking the treatment area, he will infiltrate it with a tumescent fluid that contains:

  • Local anesthetic
  • Epinephrine

The local anesthetic helps to minimize pain, allowing him to use less general anesthesia. This leads to decreased post operative nausea while the epinephrine works to constrict the blood vessels so that there is minimal bleeding. Both work together to help speed up your recovery. Next, Dr. Deuber will make a series of very small incisions through which he will insert the cannula. Every effort is made to place these incisions where they are easily camouflaged. Furthermore, the incisions are so small that they tend to be unnoticeable once they are fully healed.

Dr. Deuber uses the cannula like Michelangelo used a chisel. He is strategically removing fat in order to sculpt your body into its ideal contour. The entire procedure takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the size of your treatment area. As discussed, once these fat cells are removed, they are gone for good. Your incisions are then closed with absorbable sutures.

Liposuction Recovery Process

After your liposuction procedure, you will be placed in a compression garment that will need to be worn 24-7 for the first couple of weeks. This will not only improve your aesthetic outcome, but will greatly reduce any post-operative discomfort and risk of complications. Dr. Deuber wants you moving normally as quickly as possible so though you will receive pain medication, most of your discomfort can actually be alleviated by just walking around.

Liposuction patients may return to work within a week of surgery. You can expect some swelling for the first few months, but this should resolve on its own. The nice thing about liposuction is though it may take awhile for your final, final results, you will notice the improvement in your body contour immediately. And assuming that your weight stays stable, these improvements are permanent.
