Long-Term Results of Breast Augmentation Surgery
Thanks to breast augmentation surgery, women can experience improved self-image and greater confidence. Dr. Mark A. Deuber has helped countless patients in the Dallas, TX area by placing silicone and saline breast implants.
We get many questions from patients about long-term results after undergoing breast augmentation. Let’s offer a brief overview of some long-term breast implant concerns. This will give you a realistic idea about life after getting breast implants.
Overall Patient Satisfaction
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), roughly 98 percent of breast augmentation patients are pleased with the results of their surgery. These patients experienced improved confidence and self-esteem thanks to the placement of breast implants.
Among the women in this 2013 study, 85 percent felt their breast implants were the right size; 13 percent said they would prefer larger implants, and just 2 percent wish they had gone with smaller implants. Only 1 percent of patients expressed dissatisfaction over their post-op scarring.
How Well Do the Cosmetic Results Hold Up?
While this can vary from patient to patient, the results of a breast augmentation will typically last around 10 to 20 years. By this we don’t mean that breasts will shrink after 10 to 20 years but rather that sagging, drooping, and other cosmetic issues begin to affect the appearance of the breasts about 10 to 20 years after surgery.
The age of a patient and the size of their breast implants typically dictates the nature and extent of the cosmetic issues they face.
Will I Need a Breast Lift or Touch-Up Work Later On?
Not necessarily, but that is not unusual. Gravity and the aging process cannot be stopped.
Many breast augmentation patients will wind up undergoing some form of touch-up work to address dropping, sagging, and other cosmetic issues when they arise. It’s best to discuss any aesthetic issues you experience in more detail with your cosmetic surgeon.
Impact on Mammograms
Whether you have silicone or saline breast implants, they will affect mammograms and could lead to some issues detecting breast cancer. That said, you can note this to your doctor or radiologist to help ensure you meet with medical experts experienced in diagnostics for women with breast implants.
The Risk of Implant Ruptures and Leaks
Hard falls and blows to the chest could result in breast implant ruptures. While the risk of a rupture is relatively low for most patients, they are higher for patients with active lifestyles.
Following a serious fall or instances of physical trauma, it’s important that you seek medical attention right away and get checked for potential implant leakage. See a doctor immediately if you notice changes in breast size, implant shape, or texture.
