Natrelle 410 (“Gummy Bear”) Implant
For many years, the only two breast implant options available were either saline or silicone gel. Each type of implant has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending upon individual breast augmentation patient needs and physician preferences. However, on Feb. 20, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates all medical devices and implants sold in the United States, granted approval for a new type of implant to be marketed. The Natrelle 410, also known as the “Gummy Bear” implant because of its resemblance to the feel of the popular chewy candy, is made of a special cohesive silicone gel.
Advantages of the Natrelle 410
According to Natrelle, the company that manufactures the cohesive gel implants, the advantages of the product include:
Holds its shape. The cohesive gel that makes up the implant helps it hold its shape better than other silicone gel implants. The shape of the Natrelle 410 implant is also important. Unlike other round or teardrop shaped implants, the Natrelle 410 implant follows the natural anatomical curve of the breast. The cohesive gel helps it keep that shape for a longer period of time.
More natural look and feel. Because of the anatomical shape of the Natrelle, it more closely mimics the natural slope of the breast. The Natrelle 410 implant is shaped somewhat like a rounded wedge, which is fuller on the bottom and less so on the top. This gives it a much more natural look and feel than the silicone gel implants on the market.
Less chance of leaks, ruptures, or movement. Because of its cohesive silicone gel material, the Natrelle 410 implant will not leak or rupture, unlike standard silicone gel implants. In clinical trials performed before FDA approval, no silicone leakage was noted, even at seven years after implantation. The same studies showed that the Natrelle 410 implant is less prone to shifting inside the capsule once it is placed. This means that it is less prone to “bottoming out” or wrinkling than other silicone gel implants.
Greater variety of sizes. No two breasts are shaped exactly alike. Silicone gel implants come in a range of sizes and shapes. The Natrelle 410 implant gives surgeons and patients more options so surgery can be better customized.
Disadvantages of the Natrelle 410
Surgical skill. With other silicone implants, there is usually a period where the implants are settling into place. However, placement of Natrelle implants must be precise because they are less prone to shifting than are other silicone gel implants. Certification courses in the use of the Natrelle 410 implants are being offered to cosmetic surgeons to teach them how to properly place the Natrelle implants.
Price. The Natrelle 410 implants may be more expensive than other silicone gel implants.
Although it is exciting that another breast implant option is available, many patients are still best suited to saline or traditional silicone gel breast implants. To find out which breast implant type is best suited to your needs, contact Dr. Mark Deuber to schedule a consultation and learn more.
