Study: Facial Exercises Could Speed Up BOTOX® Results
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 7.2 million BOTOX® injections were performed in the United States in 2017. That’s up from just over 7 million in 2016, and sure to increase as more and more people try to combat signs of aging. We’ve already performed quite a few BOTOX® injections at our Dallas, TX practice this year.
Patients who visit Dr. Mark A. Deuber are pleased with the wrinkle-reduction and anti-aging results of BOTOX® injections, but they sometimes ask if there’s a way to see faster results after treatment. As a new study learned, there may be a way, and it involves facial exercises. Let’s break down that study below.
How BOTOX® Injections Work
BOTOX® injections help halt muscle contractions in the injection sites. This prevents the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the face for several months.
Dynamic wrinkles are the wrinkles that are only visible when a person makes certain kinds of facial expressions. Frown lines, forehead lines, laugh lines, and smile lines are all examples of dynamic wrinkles that can be addressed with BOTOX® injections.
When Do BOTOX® Injection Results Show?
BOTOX® injection results may start to be apparent 72 hours after you’ve undergone treatment. Typically, patients will notice the full results about 5 to 7 days after the injections were done. Keep in mind that this can vary from patient to patient.
The BOTOX®/Facial Exercise Study
The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology examined 22 women who underwent BOTOX® injections for their forehead wrinkles. Half of the women were asked to perform a forehead muscle exercise four hours after treatment. The other half were not asked to perform the exercise.
The exercise itself consisted of raising and lowering the forehead as if surprised, and knitting together the eyebrows as if squinting. The patients were asked to do three sets of 40, with a 10-minute break in between sets.
The Results of Facial Exercise on BOTOX® Injection Patients
The group that did not perform forehead and eyebrow exercises reported the first results of their BOTOX® injections became visible three to four days after treatment. The group that did perform facial exercises noticed BOTOX® results two to three days after treatment.
It may just be a one-day difference, but one day can make all the difference in the world if you want to look your best. The exercises did not affect the overall duration of BOTOX® injection results, however.
Should I Do Facial Exercises after My BOTOX®?
If you undergo BOTOX® injections, you may want to give it a shot. Don’t overdo the facial exercises, of course. Maintain that reasonable three sets of 40, with a 10-minute break in between each set.
It’s All in the Timing
If you have an event or social gather coming up, don’t wait until the last minute to undergo BOTOX® injections. Even with facial exercises, your full results may not be on display in time.
