Tummy Tuck Pre-op Instructions

You eat a sensible diet that is low in fat. You engage in aerobic fat-burning exercises for at least an hour a day. The scale shows that you are losing weight. Your cholesterol levels are right where they should be. In short, you are doing all the right things in order to safely lose weight.

However, there is one part of your weight loss plan that has eluded you. The skin that was stretched out due to weight gain does not automatically conform to your new, trimmer body shape. Nowhere is this more evident than in the abdominal area. The excess loose skin, tissue, and underlying muscle hang down over the navel, much like an apron. Despite all of your great effort toward losing weight, the flat stomach you want seems to have eluded you.

Dr. Mark Deuber has seen many patients just like you, all of whom wish to show the results of their hard work toward weight loss to their families and friends. A tummy tuck procedure (abdominoplasty), which is designed to remove excess fat and tissue from the abdomen and tighten up the underlying abdominal muscles, may be the finishing touch that you need to boost your self-confidence to proudly show off the results of all your hard work to lose weight.

There is a tendency to not take cosmetic surgical procedures such as tummy tucks seriously because they are elective. However, the tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure. Dr. Deuber gives patients pre-op instructions to prepare them for surgery.

Two to Three Weeks Prior to Surgery

If you smoke or consume more than just an occasional alcoholic drink, this is the perfect time to quit for good. Smoking can dry out the skin, and alcohol works as a blood thinner, so can increase the risk of bleeding before and after surgery. The end result in either case is longer healing time and the possibility of excessive scarring.

One Week Prior to Surgery

  • Fill any prescriptions for antibiotic and pain medicine Dr. Deuber has given you.
  • Get all necessary pre-op lab work done.
  • Arrange to have somebody drive you to and from the surgery center and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. You will not be allowed to drive home by yourself, or leave the surgery center by taxi or bus.
  • Prep your bed by putting books, magazines, tissues, snacks, bottled water, and TV remote within easy reach.
  • Charge your laptop and e-reader if you plan to use them.
  • Do all laundry, including your bedding.
  • Do NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery. Any prescription medications can be taken with a small sip of water.
  • Do NOT use any antiperspirant/deodorant, perfume, makeup, or lotion starting the day before surgery.
  • Lay out the clothes you plan to wear for the day of surgery. They should be loose, pull-on pants and a button-down shirt.
  • Remove any contact lenses and jewelry, including piercings.
  • Take a hot shower, shampoo your hair, and thoroughly scrub with antibiotic soap.
  • Wear the style of underwear or bikini bottoms you would normally wear. This allows Dr. Deuber to know where to place incisions to hide the scars as much as possible.
  • Do NOT wear any hair product, hairspray, or nail polish to surgery.

Day of Surgery

A tummy tuck procedure can give you more confidence in a bikini, little black dress, or skinny jeans. Following these pre-op instructions will increase the odds of results that will boost that confidence.
