Where in the World Is Cosmetic Surgery Popular?

You probably already know how popular cosmetic procedures are in the United States. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ 2014 annual survey, almost 16 million cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed by its more than 7,000 member surgeons.

How does the United States stack up to the rest of the world in terms of cosmetic procedures? Which other parts of the world are popular for cosmetic procedures, and which ones are requested the most often? The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) conducted a survey in 2014 of 1,400 of its approximately 40,000 members from various countries in order to get a more global perspective of cosmetic procedures. Below, Dr. Mark Deuber has summarized some of the highlights of the ISAPS study.

Worldwide Total Cosmetic Procedures

According to the ISAPS survey, a total of more than 20 million cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed worldwide in 2014. Of these, approximately 10.5 million were non-surgical procedures and approximately 9.5 million were surgical procedures. As with the ASPS data, non-surgical procedures were more popular than surgical ones. Furthermore, the face and head constituted the most popular area of the body for surgical procedures, totaling more than 4 million procedures.

Most Popular Procedures by Country

The United States constituted the lion’s share of total cosmetic procedures, at more than 4 million (20 % of the total number of worldwide procedures). This was followed by Brazil, with more than 2 million (10 %); Japan, with more than 1 million (6 %); South Korea, with more than 980,000 (5 %); and Mexico, with more than 700,000 (4 %).

Breaking this down further, cosmetic surgeries were also the most popular in the United States, with almost 1.5 million procedures (15 % of total procedures), followed by Brazil, with 1.3 million (14 %); South Korea, with more than 440,000 (5 %); Mexico, with more than 381,000 (4 %); and Japan, with more than 326,000 (3.4 %).

The United States also led the way in popularity of non-surgical procedures, with a total of more than 2.5 million (25 % of total procedures), followed by Japan, with more than 933,000 (9 %); Brazil, with more than 715,000 (7 %); South Korea, with almost 540,000 (5 %); and Mexico, with almost 325,000 (3 %).

Number of Overall Procedures

Eyelid surgery was the most popular cosmetic procedure, with more than 1.4 million procedures being performed for 2014 (15 % of total procedures). This was followed by liposuction, with almost 1.4 million (14 %); breast augmentation, with more than 1.3 million (14 %); fat grafting, with more than 965,000 (10 %); and rhinoplasty, with almost 850,000 (9 %).

BOTOX® Cosmetic topped the list as the most popular non-surgical procedure, with more than 4.8 million procedures (45% of total procedures). This was followed by hyaluronic acid, which is a type of dermal filler. More than 2.6 million of these procedures were performed (25 %). Hair removal was the third most popular non-surgical procedure, at more than 1.2 million (12 %), followed by chemical peels, with more than 493,000 (5 %); and laser skin resurfacing, with more than 480,000 procedures (5 %).

What this all adds up to is the fact that the popularity of cosmetic procedures continues to rise, both in the United States and abroad. More and more people around the world are looking to improve their appearance through cosmetic surgical and non-surgical means.
